Tests Used to Detect/Diagnose Breast Cancer in Men
- Needle Biopsies
- Core Breast Biopsies
- Excisional Biopsies
- Estrogen and Progesterone Receptor Tests
- HER2 Tests
- Mammograms
- Ultrasounds
Explanations
- Needle Biopsy- uses a thin needle to remove part of a lump or any fluid that may look suspicious and harmful
- Core Breast Biopsy and Excisional Biopsy- almost the same as a Needle Biopsy, however, a wide needle is used and the entire lump or suspicious tissue is removed
- Estrogen and Progesterone Receptor Tests- measure the amount of those hormones in the body to see if hormone therapy could help prevent the cancer from expanding
- HER2 Tests- measure the amount of HER2 (a growth factor protein), done to see if there is an excessive amount of this protein and if it is causing more cancer cells to grow
